About the Competition
The NSC SLD Essay Competition is held in commemoration of Stephen Lawrence, who was tragically killed on 22 April 1993 in an unprovoked racist attack. His death led to the publication of the Macpherson Report, described as “one of the most important moments in the modern history of criminal justice in Britain.” Stephen Lawrence Day is observed on 22 April each year in honour of his life and aspirations.
This year, the theme of Stephen Lawrence Day is “The Power of Learning.” To celebrate this theme and encourage future lawyers from non-fee-paying schools to consider a career at the Bar, we invited 16-18 year olds to enter our essay competition. Entrants were asked to write no more than 1,500 words on the topic: “Should law be a mandatory subject in schools?”
We extend our gratitude to all the participants for their hard work and insightful contributions.
