Stephen Lawrence Day Essay Competition 2026
Stephen Lawrence was killed on 22nd April 1993 in an unprovoked racist attack. His tragic death led to the publication of the Macpherson Report, described as “one of the most important moments in the modern history of criminal justice in Britain.” In honour of his life and his aspirations, Stephen Lawrence Day is marked on 22nd April of each year.
For 2026, the Stephen Lawrence Day Foundation continues its theme, “A Legacy for Change”, focusing on expanding opportunities, building a more inclusive society, and empowering young people through its pillars of Classrooms, Communities, and Careers.
To commemorate Stephen Lawrence Day and to encourage students to consider a career at the Bar, we are once again inviting 16–18 year olds from non-fee paying schools to enter our annual Stephen Lawrence Day essay competition.
Entrants are invited to write no more than 1,500 words answering the question:
“Is Education the Key to a Fair Justice System?”
We hope this question will encourage students to think critically about access to justice, equality of opportunity, and the role education plays in shaping both legal institutions and those who work within them.
