Stephen Lawrence Day Essay Competition 2024

Stephen Lawrence was killed on 22 April 1993 in an unprovoked racist attack. His tragic death led to the publication of the Macpherson Report, described as “one of the most important moments in the modern history of criminal justice in Britain.” In honour of his life and his aspirations, Stephen Lawrence Day is marked on 22 April of each year. The theme of this year’s SLD is “The Power of Learning”.

To commemorate SLD, and to encourage future lawyers to consider a career at the Bar, we are once again inviting 16-18 year olds from non-fee paying schools to enter our SLD essay competition. Entrants should write no more than 1,500 words answering the question: “Should law be a mandatory subject in schools?”

The deadline for entries is Friday 31 May and all essays should be emailed to minipupillage@newsquarechambers.co.uk in Word or PDF format.

Prizes include work experience in Chambers, a CV review and career guidance, legal book vouchers and, of course, the publication of the winning essay on our website.
