Noted for his “excellent knowledge of charity law” (Legal 500, 2023), William is a leading barrister in cases involving all aspects of charity and philanthropy. William is a former co-chair of the Charity Law Association Annual Conference. He has sat on the CLA’s Executive Committee and chaired a number of sector working parties.

Dr Mary Synge is a charity law consultant and author. She is also an Honorary Senior Research Fellow at the University of Liverpool, an Honorary Senior Fellow at the University of Melbourne, and a Charity Law Scholar of the International Charity Law Network, University of Notre Dame. A former solicitor at Linklaters, she was awarded a PhD by the University of Bristol and has held academic posts at the Universities of Bristol, Cardiff, Exeter and Reading. ​Mary has presented at various international conferences, often by invitation, including Montreal (2015), Michigan (2017), Wellington (2018) and Melbourne (2019). She has submitted evidence to Law Commission consultations and parliamentary inquiries, and was invited to give oral evidence to the House of Lords Special Public Bill Committee on the latest Charities Bill (2021). Her first monograph, The ‘New’ Public Benefit Requirement: Making Sense of Charity Law? was published in 2015 by Hart Publishing. Her research has also been published in leading journals, including Cambridge Law Journal, Law Quarterly Review, Modern Law Review and Public Law, and in several edited collections, including most recently Research Handbook on Not-For-Profit Law (Edward Elgar 2018) and Charity Law: Exploring the Concept of Public Benefit (Routledge 2022). Mary’s latest book, The University-Charity: Challenging Perceptions in Higher Education, was published in March 2023.
