  • Overview

    Hugo Birtle achieved a first-class degree from the University of Oxford, along with completing the GDL and BPTC at the City Law School. He underwent a rigorous twelve-month pupillage at Enterprise Chambers in London, and subsequently pursued a third-six/probationary tenancy period at the same set, concluding in April 2023. Hugo has gained valuable experience in various legal domains, including commercial, company, insolvency, and property work.

    Hugo joined New Square Chambers as a third-six pupil on 4 September 2023.

  • Insolvency

    Examples of the work Hugo has undertaken during pupillage include:

    • Petitions to wind-up companies in both the County Court and the High Court, including handling a chambers list of multiple petitions in the winding-up list in the High Court.
    • Bankruptcy petitions both in the County Court and the High Court.
    • Insolvency Act applications, including an application to restrain advertisement of a winding-up petition, an application for rescission of a winding-up petition, applications to extend administrations of companies, an application for possession and sale of a bankrupt’s property which included an application under TOLATA.
    • During pupillage, drafting a skeleton argument for a supervisor for an application to set aside a statutory demand, which included considering issues around whether a debt was demanded under a guarantee and whether that debt was for a liquidated sum.
  • Commercial Litigation

    Examples of the work Hugo has undertaken during pupillage include:

    • Assisting in the drafting of a witness statement in a claim brought by the FCA under the Financial Services and Markets Act.
    • During pupillage, drafting relevant parts of a particulars of claim for a supervisor for a claim under the Financial Services and Markets Act, and drafting amendments to a defence in relation to alleged unregulated collective investment schemes and alleged unlawful means conspiracy.
    • During pupillage, drafting an opinion for a supervisor considering issues around breach of contract, whether a term was implied, procuring breach of contract, and potential fiduciary or agency relationships.
    • Drafting particulars of claim for money owing under an estate agency contract.
    • Acting in CPR applications, including applications to set aside default judgment, an application for summary judgment and/or strike-out, an application to make an interim charging order final, and an application for possession and sale pursuant to a final charging order.
  • Company & Partnership

    Examples of the work Hugo has undertaken during pupillage include:

    • During pupillage, drafting opinions for a supervisor on issues including a s.994 petition, involving a potential application to strike out, and a potential claim for breach of director’s duties by former directors of a company in liquidation which involved issues around the proper payment of dividends and the principle in Re Duomatic.
    • During pupillage, drafting particulars of claim for a supervisor for a claim against directors of a company in liquidation for breach of directors duties, as well as Insolvency Act claims.
  • Property

    Examples of the work Hugo has undertaken during pupillage include:

    • During pupillage, drafting an opinion for a supervisor in relation to easements and a potential claim in nuisance, and drafting a defence and claim for relief from forfeiture in relation to a forfeiture claim.
    • Acting for the claimants in a CCMC in a claim for damages from failure to uphold repairing obligations.

      • Awarded scholarships by Gray’s Inn for both the GDL and BPTC.

      • BA History at Lincoln College, Oxford – First-Class.
      • Distinction in preliminary examinations.
      • College prize for best undergraduate history thesis in college.
      • College prizes for performance in preliminary and final examinations.
      • Awarded a college exhibition and then a scholarship for academic performance.
